As a Nigerian family that just moved to Canada, we are still finding our feet in this new country. From tax codes to rental agreements to daily life, we are learning as we go. In the midst of all these, we can easily forget important responsibilities like renewing our Nigerian passports.
BusinessDay Nigeria reported that over 10,000 Nigerians in Canada have already renewed their Nigerian passports. This number is growing and renewing a passport in Canada may get tougher in the future.
In this post, we will provide a step by step guide on how to renew your Nigerian passport in Canada. We will address the questions you have about the process and give you valuable tips to make the passport renewal process smooth and successful.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Renewing Your Nigerian Passport in Canada
Want to renew your Nigerian passport in Canada? Here’s what to do:
Fill the online application.
- Visit the Nigerian Immigration Service website.
- You will have two options: select “applying from outside Nigeria.” Choose “apply” for passport renewal in the passport section.
- Log in with your Google, Yahoo or OpenID. If you don’t have an account, register.
- Choose “Standard E-passport” and select Canada as the processing country to start the online application form.
- Choose the Processing Embassy in Canada (Ottawa). Fill the online form and make sure to print a copy of the completed application before you proceed to make the payment.
- After submission, you will receive a reference number and an application ID. For more information on specific passport requests or renewal issues, you can visit the Nigerian High Commission Ottawa website.
Pay online.
The cost of renewing a Nigerian passport in Canada is based on the number of pages and age of the applicant. You can pay online with your credit/debit card. Only money order payment for these fees can be made if sent directly to the Nigerian Immigration Service Headquarters in Abuja. After payment, make sure to print the payment receipt (confirmation) slip. An extra administrative charge of $50 can be paid only during your appointment in the form of a money order. The money order must be made payable to the “Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa.”

Book an appointment.
After filling the virtual application and payment, the next step is to schedule your appointment with the Nigerian Embassy in Ottawa. To do this:
Please follow these steps:
- Since the appointment calendar is no longer available on the Nigerian High Commission Ottawa website, you will need to visit the appointment page on the Nigerian Immigration Service website.
- Enter your Application ID and reference number.
- You will be directed to the “appointment slot” page.
- Choose your preferred date and time.
- Select Ottawa.
- Check the appointment availability calendar to make sure the slot is available and your appointment date doesn’t coincide with a Nigerian national holiday.
- Submit and print the Appointment (confirmation) slip.
Since only one Commission offers passport renewal services and the population of Nigerians in Canada is growing, it’s getting tough to get a slot less than a month away. It’s recommended to book your appointment 2 years before your passport expires.
